The Federal Government has barred recipients of honorary degrees from using the “Dr” title.
Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, announced the decision after the Federal Executive Council meeting held on April 30.
He said the move is aimed at ending the abuse and politicisation of honorary degrees.
According to him, such awards have been used for political patronage and financial gain over the years.
The government also warned that universities that violate the directive will face sanctions.
Vice Chancellors have now been instructed to standardise the process.
Going forward, institutions must obtain approval from the National Universities Commission before awarding honorary degrees.
