Professor Christopher Nyong Ekong Early Life and Education

Professor Christopher Nyong Ekong was born on 25th October 1967 in Kaduna.

He began his primary education at St. Patrick’s Primary School, Iboko Offot, Uyo, and later completed it at UNA Primary School, Etinan, due to his father’s job transfers.

For his secondary education, he attended Etinan Institute before moving to Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Four Town, Uyo, where he completed his studies.

He later gained admission into the University of Cross River State, now known as the University of Uyo, where he studied Economics and graduated in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science degree.

Academic and Professional Career

After completing his National Youth Service, Prof. Ekong proceeded to the University of Port Harcourt in 1990, where he obtained a Master’s degree in Economics (Money and Banking) in 1992.

In 1993, he began his academic career as an Assistant Lecturer at the University of Uyo.

He later earned his PhD in Economics in 2001 and rose through the ranks in academia.

Over the years, he has held several key positions at UNIUYO, including:

  1. Head of Department of Economics
  2. Coordinator, B.Sc. Economics E-learning Programme
  3. Director of International Programme
  4. Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences

Prof Christopher Ekong also delivered the 73rd inaugural lecture of the university on a topic focused on development and corruption in Nigeria.

Public Service and Consultancy Experience

Beyond academics, Prof. Ekong has worked extensively in public service and consultancy.

He has worked with international organisations like United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and companies such as Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).
