UNICAL Asks Students to Withdraw and Change Programme Due to Quota Issue

October 2, 20252 minute read

The University of Calabar (UNICAL) has directed some students to withdraw or change their programmes following an admission quota crisis affecting the institution.

UNICAL Asks Students to Withdraw and Change Programme Due to Quota Issue

The affected students include those in Dentistry, Medicine and Surgery, and Nursing Science, with the quota issue mostly affecting medical-related courses.

Reports indicate that even students with a 3.0 CGPA have been instructed to change programmes.

In addition, students who changed courses without official clearance are also being asked to switch to other departments such as Anatomy, Physiotherapy, Microbiology, and related fields.

Some of the major hurdles highlighted include:

  1. Students in Year 1 Medicine and Surgery must maintain at least a 3.5 CGPA to retain their place.
  2. Any student with an “F” grade in any course is automatically transferred out of the programme.
  3. Students with more than one O’Level sitting are disqualified.
  4. Students who initially gained admission into other departments but later switched into Medicine and Surgery are being screened out.
  5. Those found guilty of irregularities such as forged documents risk outright expulsion.

These measures have triggered widespread anxiety among students, many of whom worry about losing their place in the programme despite their hard work and financial investment.

The uncertainty has left students distressed, as they continue to seek clarity, fairness, and a more compassionate approach from the university management.
