OAU Bans Hugging on Campus and Heavy Makeups – Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Ile-Ife management has introduced a new dress code policy in the university community.

According to a memo dated June 13, 2025, students who violate the approved dress code risk rustication for one or two semesters, depending on the offence.

The university has outlined specific offences that attract rustication for one semester, including:

1.         Se*ually provocative dresses
2.         Backless clothes
3.         Transparent wears
4.         Off-shoulder clothes
5.         Bomb shorts
6.         Tattered jeans
7.         Dreadlocks for males/Cowries for females
8.         Micro/mini/skimpy dresses
9.         Sagging for males/females
10.     Hair braiding for males
11.     Heavy makeups
12.     Rumpled and dirty clothes
13.     Hair plaiting or weaving by male students
14.     Coloured hairstyles
15.     Hair braiding for males
16.     Spangled hairstyle for males
17.     Touching, kissing, and hugging of the opposite sex

This policy has sparked mixed reactions from the public, with some viewing it as a violation of students’ human rights and others seeing it as a necessary measure to maintain academic focus.
